  • Learn How to Build Your Own Fire (And Keep It Going)
I recently went on a camping trip and my husband. It was the first time we had ever been camping by ourselves. During our stay- I got to learn how to start my own campfire and keep it going. I can’t tell you how cool it was for me to actually learn a survival skill that is so invaluable.
It got me thinking about how important it is to make sure that you know how to be sustainable as a business and light your own fire. What do you need as a business owner to survive? For me this week end- I learned that I needed water, fire & shelter (in that order). For you- you may need staff, additional talent, or a more flexible cash flow. How will you fuel your fire? How will you keep it going when it starts getting cold?
Here are some tips that I learned from lighting my own flame:
1. Find your fuel first.
2. Start slow. If you try to grow to quickly, you’ll burn too fast and the fire will die.
3. Be strategic. Stack your resources so that you can let the air in.
4. Keep an eye on your fire. Adjust when needed.
5. Add more fuel. Once you have a solid foundation- the fire will start to go more on its own.
6. When you’re done- have a plan to safely put the fire out. (Or an exit plan if you don’t want to keep your own fire burning.)
Sometimes it’s good to think about these things. Don’t assume that everything will always work. Be prepared and enjoy what you’ve built. Keep it going!
